Does anyone know how to take care of an outdoor Bonsai plant?
Posted by Bonsai Care on Nov 29, 2008
I live in New England, and it came with very brief instructions, and I've looked online and got conflicting instructions. Some say it needs to be kept outside all winter, some say to bring it in. I forgot it on my deck and it was cold out and all the leaves fell off, so I hope I didn't kill it already!!! Oh, It is a outdoor grape bonsai if that helps. Any advice would be appreciated!
I also live in New England (Boston) and the answer is leave it outdoors and let it go dormant. Just give it very little water until we get constant temperature below freezing, Put it in a shed or some protected area out of sunlight to prevent it from getting warm and then suddenly cold., doesn't need sun, fertilize or water at this time. It should have gone to sleep for the winter. Keep it out of the weather and in the Spring take it out and let Momma Nature wake her up and bring her back.
Anyone help with Bonsai tree care?
Posted by Bonsai Care on Nov 29, 2008
I've had a Bonsai tree for a few months without any problems-then after watrering it last night—the leaves have turned yellow and are falling out!
This site has a lot of advice applicable to your problem.
http://www.bonsaisite.com
However, it is very unlikely that the reported problem was caused by a single watering last night. Leaves turning yellow and falling off can be caused by BOTH over-watering and under-watering.
i have a japanese holly bonsai and the leaves have gone hard and falling off.any help?
Posted by Bonsai Care on Nov 27, 2008
Could this be an outdoor tree that you are keeping in the house? This is often a problem when people sell trees, they mislead you to think that is OK to keep an outdoor tree inside. Anyhow, the name "Japanese holly" covers many species of trees. If you would like, to know the exact species of tree, take it to a local nursery and ask them, or if you wish, send me a photo at
wchoat@american-bonsai.com and I'll try to determine what it is. Once the species is determined, we can tell you how to combat the problem of falling leaves. Meanwhile make sure it is moist, but not soaking wet. Also, you are welcome to check my website:

What's an easy Bonsai plant to grow inside with moderate sunshine?
Posted by Bonsai Care on Nov 27, 2008
Looking for something i can put near my window year round, any ideas for nice bonsai?
A money tree is good for limited sunshine. Also a ficus tree, but they can tend to drop their leaves everywhere. The tradtional bonsai is a small juniper which do not like to be in doors almost at all. Also you could think about lucky bamboo, it gives the same asian feel and it acutally does better without very much light. And you can train it to curl different directions and make shapes with it. Ficus tree's sometimes can get a little big if you arent into purning alot. Money tree's grow slower. But if you want a low mainitance plant that still looks cool go with the bamboo. Good Luck!
how to make my bonsai grow fast, or i mean how to care my bonsai tree?
Posted by Bonsai Care on Nov 27, 2008
i need natural fertilizer for my bonsai tree here in philippines and i wanna learn more about my bonsai caring..
Fast, is not how a bonsai should grow, They’re supposed to stay small. That’s the whole point of bonsai. Find a local bonsai club because they’re a great source of info. In the meantime, peruse this site for care, etc.

Outdoor Bonsai Care – Japanese Maple?
Posted by Bonsai Care on Nov 25, 2008
My girlfriend bought me a group of 4 Japanese Maple bonsai trees, aged 8 – 10 years, from Dobbies 3 weeks ago. As I work overseas it was left in her care for those three weks, in which she kept it indoors, albeit adequetely watered. I received a panicky email on thursday advising me that the leaves on 3 of the 4 were wilting badly and asking what she should do. I told her to put it outside immedietely, which she did, and I checked it this morning upon my return – but its looking a bit knackered. I only ever kept indoor bonsai before, but thought that the acer was fairly hardy and would be okay if left ouside. We are away on holiday for 2 weeks shortly, what shoudl i do to prevent the trees from dying? Leave it outside and hope for the best???
All advice gratefully received…
Sounds like your girlfriend left your tree's to get too dry before watering!!! Your tree's are in distress! People often will notice their house plants are dry because they look wilted, so they give them some water and they just perk back up. But with Bonsai that level of wilting is likely to be too late. A wilted Bonsai or one that is dropping its leaves spells real trouble. It will not recover the same way a houseplant does.
The Bonsai has a bare minimum of soil, and once it has been allowed to get bone dry, it is very easy for the tree to die or be severely damaged. Therefore, you really have to check the tree often.
One of the main problems with house plants arises from over watering, but with Bonsai, one of the most immediate problems is under watering. So the first thing you need to know is if the tree is wet or dry.
Place your tree outside where it can get morning sun ONLY.Move to shade in the afternoon, protecting from wind. Keep the tree MOIST not soaked,(you can actually drown a bonsai!)taking care not to chill the roots. Hopefully, and I do say hopefully with caution, it will recover in time. Do not feed the tree whilst it is in distress.
which plant to use for creating a Bonsai?
Posted by Bonsai Care on Nov 23, 2008
I live in Columbia, MO. I want to begin growing a tree and make it a Bonsai. Which plant to use for indoor bonsai in midwest region?
I think a Japanese Maple works very well, but you may have problems finding one small enough without starting it from seed.
Wow, I can't believe that someone as educated as answerer number 4 claims to be doesn't know that Japanese Maple can be bonsai. I think everyone knows that bonsai is a style of growing plants and not a particular species of plant.
How to take care of a BONSAI plant?

Need some guidelines to take care of a Bonsai plan
The only way anyone can give you the correct answer is to know the species of the tree. Hundreds of species are used for bonsai, and there are almost as many ways to take care of them. I'll be glad to give you the exact care instructions if you send a photo of the tree, or a description of the foliage to me at
wchoat@american-bonsai.com . You may also want to visit my website
www.american-bonsai.com Also, it will be important to know where you live in case it is an outdoor tree. Don't go by what the seller told you, it may be an outdoor tree and you were told it could be kept indoors. Sadly this happens much too often.
I just planted some Japanese black pine bonsai seeds. How long will it take for them to germinate and grow?
Posted by Bonsai Care on Nov 21, 2008
The seeds are planted indoors, in almost full sun. About how long will they take to germinate?
It will be a short period, probably a few weeks. Actually, these are not "bonsai" seeds, they are just Japanese black pine seeds. Bonsai is a style of tree. I'm sorry to say that you have been "taken." That is how some people make a living, so sad. BUT, now you can turn them into bonsai when they start growing. You may want to read the Bonsai Care page on my site:
http://www.american-bonsai.com . It is much better to get a Japanese black pine bonsai from a nursery and start trimming it to become a bonsai someday. Even better are mugho pines because their needles are shorter.
How do I take care of my ficus indoor bonsai?
Posted by Bonsai Care on Nov 21, 2008
I'd like to know when I need to water it and prune it and how long it may live? Oh and I pruned a leaf off and a white substance came out, what is that?
WATER? Don't set up a schedule, water it when the top 1/2" of soil is dry. It likes to be moist, but not soaking wet.
PRUNE? When new growth comes out where you don't want it, and you can trim the tips of new growth to make it fill-in more.
HOW LONG WILL IT LIVE? Long enough to pass to your grandchildren, and their children.
WHITE SUBSTANCE? It's the sap, and a "self-healer." Wash it off your skin before it dries. It won't hurt you, but will get dark and may be slightly irritating.
If you send email to me at:
wchoat@american-bonsai.com , I'll send you more care information for ficus. Also, you may want to check the Bonsai Care page of my website:

a juniper bonsai plant?
I think that its a great idea. A bonsai is a gift that you can watch mature and beautify over time, and it will live longer than he does
