Does anyone in the UK or the British Isles do Bonsai?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Dec 31, 2008

Bonsai is the ancient Japanese tradition of creating miniature gardens in small boxes or planters. Does anyone do this and if yes, then how long have you been doing this and do they sell well in your country?
I have ben creating these delightful miniature gardens complete with live green moss, working waterfalls, brooks or bubbling ponds, along with a miniature tree, placing them in a Saikai Dish and marketing them here in the USA, for the past ten years. I do this as a hobby, a way for me to relax from the daily grind of running two companies that market luxury houseboats and renewable energy sources. I find it to be very relaxing, comfortable and rewarding, and I only sell them if I feel that the person buying my creation will take as good a care of the tree as I would.
I can use native grown trees, in whatever country I am in, so this is not a problem, and I have heard that in the British Isles, there is a lot of gren moss available.
Is anyone doing this now?
Thank you

How often should I water my bonsai tree in the winter?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Dec 31, 2008

And how much water? It's an indoor bonsai and is about 30 cm high.

Indoor bonsai are more subject to drying in winter when the humidity in your home is usually very low. Conifers are particularly susceptible. Water thoroughly every several days, sooner if the leaves (needles) appear to droop. About once a month, immerse the entire pot up to the soil level in room-temperature tap water. It helps to move the bonsai to a room with higher humidity such as a kitchen or bathroom window sill.

Trying to care for this little bonsai tree?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Dec 31, 2008

I would like to find a web site to help me find out the type (poss fig?)and help me get it healthy and to care for it. I bought a book but it doesn’t have very much in it about spider mites (which I know it has). I am doing my best but would like some additional info. The gravel on the soil around it is hard like they applied a crust, is that normal? I am keeping inside now as it is too cold outside.

For the spider mites if not severe you can spray with a few drops of dish detergent mixed with a few drops of oil in a quart spray bottle shake well . Alcohol on a Q-tip is an economical and quick treatment, however chemical insecticide sprays are available. But I wouldn't do them at the same time.

And the gravel is like they glued it together. Mine was like that.

How to save a outdoor bonsai kept indoors all winter?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Dec 29, 2008

I'm very new to bonsai, and made the mistake of keeping my Japanese maple indoors all winter. It is about a foot tall and was very healthy before. Now half of the leaves have fallen off and the other half don't look very good. One bud released a tiny sickly looking leaf. With winter at least four months away, what is the best thing to do to keep this maple alive?

Maples need to go through their natural dormancy period, and you starved it from that. It almost had the equivalent of staying awake all night and now the plant is in overdrive.

Im also quite new to bonsai, but all I know is that you need to get it back to its regular cycle. Im not too sure how to go about doing this…but I just thought i'd put in what I know.

You should try contacting Bill Choat…he's a bonsai enthusiast who helped me online once. You might be able to find his name in yahoo answers since thats where I first found out about him.

GOOD LUCK!

hello i just bought a Bonsai Plant its called Serissa Foetida and i was wondering is it an indoor plant?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Dec 29, 2008

General Care : The Serissa is an indoor plant. It needs as much light as possible and should be kept in a well-aired area where there is plenty of light and a temperature between 13-18 degrees C (55-65 degrees F). It should be kept away from drafts and kept outside during the summer in partial shade.

I need help on the topic of Bonsai & I live in Australia?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Dec 27, 2008

My bonsai is either a Chinese or Japanese Juniper. Can anyone give me info on how I should care for it?

You may want to read the Bonsai Care page on my site:
http://www.american-bonsai.com . However, if you send an email to me at:
wchoat@american-bonsai.com , I'll send you the care instructions I give people who adopt my juniper bonsai ("bonsai" is also plural).

I just recently received a bonsai tree and?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Dec 27, 2008

the person who gave it as a present told me I should water it every two days. Does that mean it is an indoor bonsai tree? I am not sure of its type. Also, how should I trim it? Its leaves are very thin and small.

Compare your plant with pics on this site and you can check for appropriate care instructions too.

Any tips on how to keep my Bonsai plant alive? I give it water and sun during the day and its still dying????

Posted by Bonsai Care on Dec 27, 2008

you may be giving it TO much water. Bonsai's do not need alot of water, I water mine maybe 2-4 times a month, and I don't give it direct water, I spritz it with a spray bottle…. It's fine in the sun, but water it less and you'll see it will revive itself..

Bonsai's are very delicate plants and are generally grown in humid, hot areas, so they get the majority of thier moisture from the humid climate….

Good Luck!

Can SPCA or the governemnt lock up the disgusting, cruel, non-human like Bonsai people??? Japanese people make me sick with their twisted minds.
rite…you live in Jap and your dad works in jap, of course you speak for them…not suprised…japan is a pretty twisted country these days…they have vending machines that sell pre-worn woman undies with their pix…jap's porn industry is well known… if you live in jap you should know, a lot of people pay girls to poop on their face so they can eat shit…yes…part of their sm culture…it's an industry there!!! Maybe people you meet are the small portion of their people who are NORMAL in their abnormal society. I agree they don't eat dogs and cats…they do eat whales, which are endangered species!!!

how to grow a BONSAI plant?what are the various steps and precautions we should take?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Dec 23, 2008

i know that we have to cut the tap root but how to do it ..anyone who is expert in growing bonsai ?
for decorating in drawing room .
for decorating in drawing room .
please also tell which trees are the best for bonsai, and is there any particular season to cultivate them?

Cultivating "bonsai" is not something one would do in any kind of a hurry. My advice is to go buy a book translated into English, written by a Japanese master. Then read it carefully.

I have grown "bonsai" for over 40 years — the key word is patience.

There are two main ways to start:
1. From a seed (requiring many years to get anywhere with it).
2. From a plant taken from nature (putting it aside for about two years
and giving it loving care just to make sure it survives).

Of course, nowadays, you can simply buy one! But you have to know what to do with it!

In any case, care and attention are mandatory. All the information about when to cut off the leaves (to get smaller ones and thus enhance the "illusion") and when to cut away excess roots (to be able to grown the plant in a tiny container) and how to bend the branches etc. is far too complex to write about here.

A good book is a must. Believe me.

Oh, yeah, what's a could plant to start with? My choice would be
any of the "box trees": Any of several small evergreen trees and shrubs, with small, leathery leaves. Some species are used as hedging plants and for shaping into garden ornaments. (Genus Buxus, family Buxaceae.

Being an evergreen, you will have leaves all year round.
