Japanese Red Maple and Red Sunset Maple Question!?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Jan 30, 2009

I bought these two trees about 2 feet tall each. I need to know the type of soil, sun and information to take care of them. I live in zone 5, and I am trying to grow them into bonsai trees. please give as much information as you can.

Thank You.
i need the details about Japanese Red Maple and/or Red Sunset Maple tree.

Overview : The Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) is the most widely grown maple in gardens and is a perfect subject for bonsai. It is valued for its compact size, delicate ferny foliage and brilliant fall (autumn) coloring - from rich gold to deepest blood-red. The more than 300 cultivars range from rock garden miniatures to vigorous small trees, with a variety of leaf shape, size and color.

General Care : Requires semi-shade in summer, full sun the rest of the year, and protection from wind.

Pinch out 'ambitious' or unwanted shoots in spring - with main pruning to be conducted at this type of year. When new shoots have developed to around three to five nodes - prune them - but make sure to leave at least 1cm (1/2in) extra to allow for die back. This is something important to do when pruning all types of Japanese maples. Trim leaves in late spring.

Re-pot and fertilize in late winter to early spring.

Water as frequently as needed - do not allow bonsai to dry out as this can also cause leaf burn.

Other Comments : Although more tolerant of winter climates than most maples, it needs shade and shelter or leaves may shrivel.

Available in nurseries with more unusual and rare forms found in bonsai nurseries or through mail-order services in seedling or seed form.

Be careful of drying winds which can be quite detrimental if the plant is fully exposed - causing leaf burn and die back - especially for new formed shoots.

bonsai tree recommendations?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Jan 30, 2009

i want to purchase a bonsai tree online. i've never had one before. any recommendations of what type of bonsai tree i should get? i wanted something that is kind of tall and maybe has some color to it. also, do these indoor trees last a long time? i would think so since they are rather expensive. any tips and advice would be appreciated! thanks

You have taken the right first step by deciding that you want an indoor bonsai. Many people get an outdoor tree and try to keep it inside, and this results in death in about 6 months. Anyhow, please feel free to read the Bonsai Care page on my site:
http://www.american-bonsai.com , then proceed to the indoor bonsai pages that are separated in price categories. You'll notice that each bonsai has the height and approximate age. We can only ship live trees to the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Even if you are not in this area, you'll be able to get an idea of the type of tree you may want. If you have any questions, you're welcome to email me directly at:

How to take care of Bonsai?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Jan 30, 2009

I really want a bonsai for indoor plant, but the problem is, i don't know anything about bonsai, so is there any tips or instruction how to take care of bonsai ?
And what type of indoor bonsai should i get for beginner ?
i was thinking buying one from the store, not grow them from the seeds, so i was hoping you can give me some tips on how to take care of it

First of all, buy the seeds from a legit place. If your Bonsai is against a wall, you should turn it around every two weeks. If it is not, it may grow out of shape as it grows towards the light. Do not put it directly onto concrete if it is going to be subject to sunlight for very long periods. The heat generated off the concrete paired with the small amount of soil in a bonsai pot can "cook" the roots of the tree and kill it.

How do i revive my Bonsai Tree i think its dead?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Jan 24, 2009

i have a Japanese White pine (pinus parviflora)and am usure if it is dead or not all the leave have fallen off,
i have been told to scratch the trunk of the tree and see if it is moist or green or whitish (it is but a brownish color) the branches are all dry and snap easy i have also tried putting it in a polytene bag and still no sucess.
Also when i water it the soil stays moist but grows some kind of white moss. please any help would be grateful

If all the needless have fallen, it is dead or nearly dead. It is an evergreen which means it should always have green needles. This is an outdoor tree, and if you are keeping it inside, that is a sure way to kill it.
I needs a cold winter so it can go dormant. If you would like complete care instructions, email me at
wchoat@american-bonsai.com and I'll send them to you.
You're welcome to check my website

Another tip, if you have been keeping indoors, take it outside RIGHT NOW, take it out of the pot, and plant it in good soil for the rest of the winter. This MAY help, but only a slight chance.

Bonsai Tree Difficulty?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Jan 24, 2009

I have a Miniature Indoor Bonsai Tree Garden, Tasmanian Eucalyptus tree, and I was wondering which container keeps the seeds. I have four things with the kit; a bag of what looks like soil, a plastic container with white stuff and some soil, an empty pot, and instructions.

The Instructions do not help by the way…

seeds are usually pre-planted in the soil, the 'white stuff' could be a bag of growing medium

Where can I buy a bonsai plant/tree in England?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Jan 24, 2009

Bonsai trees are widely available in many garden centres in the UK. Buying them is the easy bit. The DIFFICULT bit is keeping them alive and thriving. It has been estimated that 75% of bonsai trees bought in the UK die within 1 year. They are not easy and require commitment and practice. If you have a local bonsai society I would strongly recommend you go along to have some handy advice available when things get tricky - as they are likely to.

Don't forget, you first have to decide whether you want an indoor or outdoor tree, then go from there.

How Often Should I Water My Bonsai Tree?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Jan 20, 2009

It Is A Fujian Tea Tree.
How often should i water it (like how may times a day?)
And how many hours between each watering? (10-12 hours?)

How often should i mist it as well, and how many times per day?

It is an indoor Bonsai tree, kept in indirect sunlight. I keep the temperature in the house at about 70 degrees, which is the bonsai's desirable temperature.

All my bonsai's have done best outdoors in a covered area. Any I have brought indoors have "kick the bucket" on me. You can water way to much. The problem is that we do not know where you live. If I guess and say treat it like you would like to be treated, that should not be to far off. Good luck and hit the library and see what you may find.

When should I plant my bonsai seeds? I'm a beginner, any good tips to grow a successful bonsai?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Jan 20, 2009

Do I need to wet the seeds in anyway? How do I care for it?

bonsais do not come from seeds; bonsais are made from normal sized plants, and the roots and branches are trimmed to stunt their growth;

you should really buy a good book all about Bonsai; Sunset books has several … and read everything it has to say before you embark on this lifelong project; bonsais take effort, time, work and study.

what how when is best to plant Meigetsu Japanese Maple seeds!?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Jan 18, 2009

i am trying to make good beautiful Bonsai .
i got seeds and i cant wait to plant them!

The state of your seeds will determine the best propagation methods. If seeds are fresh (not dried out), then plant directly and they should germinate. If your seeds are dry, they may be doubly dormant. Then soak in hot water for two days. Change water every day. Cold stratify in moist sand or vermiculite in the fridge for 2-3 months. Sow seeds into pots and keep warm & moist for two months and then chill again in the fridge for another 2 months. This should break dormancy of dried, viable seeds and produce new seedlings. Start now!

Can Bonsai Cherry Blossom trees be grown indoors?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Jan 18, 2009

Hi,

I am looking to acquire a Bonsai Cherry blossom tree (although they seem hard to find). Are they considered indoor bonsais? I would be growing it indoors.

Thanks,

Shelly

You are probably thinking of the Yoshino cherry trees that are popular in Japan and are planted around the Jefferson Memorial in Washington DC. If so, they are outdoor trees. There are indoor cherries such as Brush cherry, Surinam cherry, etc. They have blooms more often, but not as spectacular as the Yoshinos. You may want to read the Bonsai Care page on my site:

What are good trees to use for indoor bonsais?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Jan 14, 2009

I'm hoping to raise a new bonsai, having just killed off my last one after reading that it wasn't a good indoor breed.

Any help would be great! Thanks!

Any tree can be made into a Bonsai, but my favorite, and the easiest is a Banyan Tree, -though where you live might be too cold for that.
