i would need a picture of the tree to see what type it is. Also need to know what region you live in to see if it needs to stay outside. How long have you had it? To cure spider mites, your local garden center should have some pesticides safe to use to kill these bugs. It depends on how long you have had the tree and what kind of soil it came with but it sounds like you have fungus growing in the soil which has made it turn into a thick crust and a re-potting may be in order. the best websites i have found on the internet are easy to find, just type in the kind of tree and what is wrong or type “care of” to find the best link. I do that every time i have a question and get pages of answers. Good Luck

For the spider mites if not severe you can spray with a few drops of dish detergent mixed with a few drops of oil in a quart spray bottle shake well . Alcohol on a Q-tip is an economical and quick treatment, however chemical insecticide sprays are available. But I wouldn't do them at the same time.
And the gravel is like they glued it together. Mine was like that.

Spider Mites are the most common pests to attack bonsai trees. So you must take special care to protect your bonsai against this menace.
Try spraying your fig bonsai with a strong jet of water mixed with some insecticides like Malathion which is very effective against spider mites. If the plant is badly affected then you should consider using the insecticide three times a day separated by a span of one week.
It is advisable to keep your bonsai fig in the indoors during cold weather inorder to protect it from frost bites.
Figs normally prefer to be amply watered, during the summer seasons you could also consider using a half strength fertilizer solution every fortnight.
I hope this bit of information would help you in taking care of your bonsai fig.
