If they eat the peanut butter they need the granules (protein based), if they eat the jelly they gel (sugar based). Ants do farm and cultivate aphids and other soft bodied insects which may harm your tree. There is a product called "Ant Bait" at local home improvement stores. Ant Bait is similar to a roach motel and very effective.
