I repotted the tree when the buds started swelling (1 month ago), as per usual. The buds have been swollen for a month now, some had even started to open one month ago. But since then – nothing. The tree has entered what seems like suspended animation. The branches show no signs of death, like the typical dried and wrinkled look that a dead Chinese elm branch gets. There is green cambium under the bark. The tree had lots of scale insect that have been removed, and a few caterpillars, but I can’t see that retarding growth by this much. I must admit I’m stumped, and not a little worried, this is my very favourite tree. I will be absolutely gutted if it does not pull through. Any suggestions anybody?
