a maple needs to go through fall and lose its leaves and go dormant otherwise it will die from lack of rest. if you want an indoor bonsai get a tropical tree, ficus are great indoor bonsai but still would rather being outdoor in the summer. with proper care the little ones can stay little, research "mame bonsai" on the web
References :
A tree is a tree. It should be kept outside ALL year round. Bringing it indoors can be more stressful than good, it's like taking it to a warmer country which is shrouded in darkness like a cave...

Have the seedlings got identical leaves to the maple? If not they are probably weeds.
References :
http://bonsaiart.co.uk

Its a bonsai, so it wont get much bigger. iT DOESNT NEED MUCH WATER OR SUNLIGHT, (caps lock, sry). Its pretty much an indoor platn can live outside. Basicly, chose which is better for your decorationg scheme.
References :
You should have put the Seeds in the fridge. Aparantly, since your seedlings are "already up" chilling the seeds wasn't really necessary. It will take years for your plants to mature - better off finding a naturally stunted tree or buying a potted shrub to use the bonsai technique on.

Here's info on the technique: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=bonsai+techniques&ygmasrchbtn=web+search&fr=ush-ans
References :
Bonsai just means "potted plant". I never heard of putting them in the fridge. They need sunlight for photo synthesis. (sp?) The easiest thing to do is buy a plant from the nursery and trim it back. Don't grow from seedlings as it will take FOREVER! I've killed lots of plants learning but I have it now. Like I said...buy from a nursery and cut it back. BUY A BOOK on how to do it. Good luck.
References :
a bonsai doesn't just 'stay' small, you need to work at it, to keep it small.....

bonsai is still the plant that it is... if it needs to live outside, then it will not do well INSIDE..... (crepes hate it inside!)

you need to study the where's and how's a lot more before you're ready for a plant.... best idea would be to get a book.....

Get yourself a dwarf cherry.
It flowers early every spring, is easy to take care of and doesn't need to be watered hardly at all because it's kept outside.
Looks good from 6 inches up.

Just noticed that you want it indoor! In this case get a crepe myrtle which comes in variety of purple, pink or white flowers. It has tiny leaves so it looks good very small.
Although being an indoor type it will be harder to take care of of course.
References :
http://bonsaiart.co.uk

Bare totally bare. I wish I could do like a cute heart or something tho, where do suppose you learn that?
How cool would it be to do like a frog or a jack o'lantern?

"Bonsai" is a Japanese word that simply translates to "tree in a pot." It is not a lot of work, so I think it may cheer her. You might want to look at my website where I do all my own bonsai trees.... www.american-bonsai.com . Be very careful to get the particular species of tree for either inside or outside to fit your needs. Let me know if you need more help in deciding wchoat@american-bonsai.com
References :
That's a really wonderful idea. You could give her a card with it that says something about how patience is the key to developing a beautiful bonsai tree, and you know that with patience she will one day get to take her longed-for trip to Japan (and that you are rooting for her all the way.)

This art form is learned with years of study. We cannot possibly guide you with answers that are written in whole books.

This is a site I found just about Japanese Maple Bonsai.

Hi,
Pruning of bonsai trees should be done mostly in the growing season of the plant. Basic pruning can be classified into form pruning and maintenance pruning. Form pruning is carried out to give a shape to your bonsai plant where as maintenance pruning needs to be done through out the year to remove dead foliage or cut the extra growth.

Hope this information was useful to you. For more information on bonsai pruning please visit the link

Hi,
Before you choose you bonsai tree there are a lot of factors that you need to take into consideration. As a beginner it would always be a good choice to select trees that are not very difficult to train and that are tolerant to adverse conditions like the Bald Cypress, Azalea, Japanese black pine, Japanese Maple etc. You should also take into consideration the climatic conditions in your region. And more ever if you are looking for an indoor tree then yo could choose a Jade tree, or an Olive tree as well.

Please follow the link below for more exhaustive information on beginner bonsai trees.

Most bonsais are hardy trees so need to be outdoors, you'll have to go for a more tender tree. A few are commonly grown, you can even get them in garden centres or DIY stores if you just want a cheap tree. If you buy from a specialist nursery you'll get a better quality plant. Chinese elm, podocarpus or a succulent such as a crassula are some popular indoor ones.

Succulents can be good because they naturally have a fat trunk and don't need much water. Bonsais are generally hard work but a succulent should be pretty unkillable and fairly easy to keep in a tree-like shape.

Some tree-like succulents have leaves too big to look like a true bonsai but if you like the look you can gow them, for example the money plant.
References :
I do bonsia!
Probably the best bet for a beginner would be a juniper- less exspensive to start out with if you kill it- they are easy to care for and live well inside in bright light- water only when dry is the trick to this tree- trim at the coolest time of the year and fertilize in warmer times.

Checkout my facebook-http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?
I have alot of friends that might be able to help you also- I also belong to several forums listed there that will help.

The chinese elm can be cultivated as an indoor plant whereas the others are strictly for outdoors. Indoors you can cultivate your plant all year whereas the others have dormant periods in winter and they need that time to rest.

CHINESE ELM (ulmus parvifolia)---outdoor or indoor,
Virtually immune to disease, this is the best elm for bonsai training; and one of the few species of trees that can be grown outdoors or indoors. It is a semi-evergreen tree, but outdoors it is deciduous in cold temperatures. Indoors, it is an evergreen, losing only some leaves as the daylight decreases during the winter months.
References :
http://www.american-bonsai.com/product_info.php?products_id=2991&osCsid=bq91fvhkcotqbbcih0sikq2gr1

ha ha..we bought my mum a Chinese Elm for a Christmas pressie..it's about that high..http://www.bonsaiuk.co.uk/ will have some info, there are so many sites out there that we found after we'd bought it to get information for mum...good luck.
Plenty of water, re pot every year or two and separate the roots at that time, in the warmer months it's ok to leave it outside on warmer days apparently but bring it in at night.
References :
Plants generally need more light than humans, but use grow lights only if you can keep them about 6" to a foot above the plants.
Indirect sunlight is the best. As far as the temperature....if you are comfortable, the plants will be also. You may want to read the Bonsai Care page on my site:

It depends. It depends on you, your experience, your horticultural knowledge, your location and your environment. The trees you have listed all have unique challenges. All "can" be grown by a beginner, and would do best grown outdoors. I would suggest you find a local club and ask what others are growing in your area. If you can't find a local club your next bet is to check a garden center and ask what grows where you are.

You need to make sure you pick a healthy plant and do your best to keep it healthy. This requires a well draining soil, plenty of water, sunshine, and fertilizer. All this depends, again, on a number of different variables.

For a list of local clubs check the link below:

You are getting some strange answers, but Michael is right on target. You apparently have a juniper which is an outdoor tree. However, if you want to make sure, send a photo to me at:
wchoat@american-bonsai.com . I'll try to identify it and then send you complete care instruction. The kind that the seller should have given your Dad. You may also want to check the Bonsai Care page of my site:
http://www.american-bonsai.com
If it is an outdoor tree, get it outside RIGHT NOW and keep it above 30º so the roots don't freeze. Don't even think about bringing it in the house for more than TWO HOURS A MONTH.
References :
Yes they will work if they fit the fixture.... They will only draw the 20 watts they need to operate, so No, you will not blow the 20W lamps....
Ensure however that the lamps you will be using are rated for 220 volt operation... I am guessing you are in Europe since you mentioned the 220V ~50Hz so that shouldn't be a problem.
References :
B.S. Engineering... 20 years Electrician

Congratulations on owning your first bonsai! Now you can search online for it's care. There are many websites. My favorite is called "BonsaiTalk".

Kengai is Japanese for the cascading style. The tree grows over the edge of the pot and looks a little like a cascading waterfall.

It sounds like you have a Juniper. I hope you are keeping it outdoors! They will die if kept inside the house. They don't like to be watered too much and they love sunlight.

Good luck!
References :
Outdoor care Bonsai - Keep your Bonsai outdoors in a cool well lighted location. Can be brought indoors for 2 or 3 days then rotated outside again. Protect bonsai from freezing temperatures.

Bonsai care watering - Should be kept moist. Best to submerge the container in water then let it soak for 5-10 minutes. Water directly over the base of trunk.

Location - Place your plant indoors in a warm well lighted location and remember that indoor bonsai are intolerant of outdoor conditions, unless you live in a tropical area.

Fertilizing - You should fertilize once every four months using a 20-20-20 fertilizer at half the label rate. Only half because the root system is dwarf thus it only needs half the recommended amount. Do NOT fertilize when soil mix is dry.

Bonsai trees usually have small very low pots which means very little soil which cannot hold water for a long time. Another problem is that the material of the pots (ceramic or clay) can get really hot which will warm up the soil in them, causing dryness even sooner.

Hope this helps
References :
http://www.guzmansgreenhouse.com/bonsai.htm

Bonsai is a technique that can be used on almost any tree/shrub. Look around for naturally stunted trees growing near you.

Any ficus ( fig family )specimen would fit the bill, except that it would need more than moderate light ,ficus is easy to handle by beginner bonsai enthusiasts, lends itself well to shaping & styling, the leaves are shiny & attractive & those that send down ariel roots add to the aged look of the tree.
I am from India & we use the banyan (Ficus bengalensis) & the Peepul ( Ficus religiosa ) a lot in bonsai displays,i know Australia has quite a few native ficus varieties .Those that yield small figs look very attractive.
References :
Own a few ficus bonsai specimens

Olives are treated with lye or brine to cure them before processing with spices. There are web site sources for olive trees though.
Monrovia nursery marketed Olea europaea 'Montra' under the trademarked name Little Ollie. You should be able to go to any good nursery, show them the info from Monrovia. and ask them to order it.

If you can't there are mail order plants.

Some species suitable for bonsai:

    * Olea 'Cailletier': small black olive.
    * Olea europaea: common olive - This Mediterranean native grows to 25 feet, with leaves of up to three inches.
    * Olea europaea 'Montra': 'Little Ollie' olive, dwarf olive - An excellent choice for miniature bonsai, as the leaves are much smaller than the species, the 'Little Ollie' is becoming popular with bonsai enthusiasts.
    * Olea europaea oleaster: wild olive - A natural bonsai subject, it produces less oil than the species, but has smaller leaves.
    * Olea europea sativa.
    * Olea 'Picholine': green olive.
    * Olea 'Tanche': black olive

Yes, you probably have a sago palm, however, there's not enough room here to give you good care instructions. Send me an email directly to:
wchoat@american-bonsai.com and I'll send you care instructions.
You may also want to check the Bonsai Care page of my website:

Whoops. Don't trim that plant. The growth you are seeing is a new set of fronds unfolding. This is called a flush. It will happed once (or twice in good conditions) a year. This is how the plant grows.

This plant can't be trained by pruning. You can keep it small by letting it get and stay pot bound, but eventually it will get big and burst the pot. In their natural state these are trees which can achieve 15 or more feet in height.

While popularly called a Sago Palm, it is neither a palm nor does it produce Sago. It is a Cycad, one of the earth's most ancient plants. You probably have a Cycas revoluta or Cycas circinalis.

Sago, an important food starch, comes from a tree called Metroxlyn sagus. In its native countries, the natives infect the trees with maggots which eat the Sago and then the natives eat the maggots. Tasty, no? Have a bite.

Cycads don't like a lot of water so be sparing. They do like lots of light. Fertilize once or twice a year. Follow label instructions. Mostly leave it alone.
References :
Grower

You need to trim your bonsai tree. Trim the other growths off. Trimming keeps it at its small size. Use sharp scissors.
References :
i think its triming and root control that make it small. its a actual tree that is groomed and controlled to stay small. plant it outside in a pot in the ground. that way you can have the best of both worlds.
References :
You don't say what kind of tree it is. But, if the leaves are still on it, not falling down, you have a chance. Soak the entire container in a bucket or sink of water for ten minutes, to saturate the soil. Then let it drain. Don't water again until the soil feels dry when you dig your finger in to about the first joint. Overwatering at this stage could also kill it.
When it starts to show a bit of green growth, take off whatever leaves you can brush off lightly with your hand.. Once it has visible new whole leaves, remove the rest of the dead ones.
References :
The actual "bonsai" will be created as you prune and shape the plant during early spring to summer months.

You'll want to educate yourself on bonsai styles and how to apply the wires to the branches properly.

Remember some key factors here...

- Only water the soil when it feels dry. This holds true when the plant is in development as well. Don't water according to the plant, water according to the soil.

- Never water in the wintertime.

- Keep your bonsai outside 90% of the time away from direct sunlight.
I try to keep mind next to shrubbery where it will receive shade periodically throughout the day.

I found a great article that goes into more detail on the basics of bonsai care here:

Don't let the url freak you out. It's an article from a "stress relief" site but the bonsai care tips are very very good.

Have fun with it!
References :
Bonsai are not genetically dwarfed plants. They can be created from nearly any tree or shrub species and remain small through pot confinement with crown and root pruning. Some species are more sought after for use as bonsai material, because they have characteristics, such as small leaves or needles, that make them appropriate for the smaller design scope of bonsai. The purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation (for the viewer) and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity (for the grower). By contrast with other plant-related practices, bonsai is not intended for production of food, for medicine, or for creating yard-sized or park-sized landscapes. As a result, the scope of bonsai practice is narrow and focused on the successful long-term cultivation and shaping of one or more small trees in a single pot.

[edit] Techniques

This juniper makes extensive use of both jin (deadwood branches) and shari (trunk deadwood). This photograph is of the tree's back. The practice of bonsai incorporates a number of techniques either unique to bonsai or, if used in other forms of cultivation, applied in unusual ways that are particularly suitable to the bonsai domain.

Leaf trimming This technique involves the selective removal of leaves (for most varieties of deciduous tree) or needles (for coniferous trees and some others) from a bonsai's trunk and branches. A common esthetic technique in bonsai design is to expose the tree's branches below groups of leaves or needles (sometimes called "pads"). In many species, particularly coniferous ones, this means that leaves or needles projecting below their branches must be trimmed off. For some coniferous varieties, such as spruce, branches carry needles from the trunk to the tip and many of these needles may be trimmed to expose the branch shape and bark. Needle and bud trimming can also be used in coniferous trees to force back-budding or budding on old wood, which may not occur naturally in many conifers.[5] Along with pruning, leaf trimming is the most common activity used for bonsai development and maintenance, and the one that occurs most frequently during the year.

It's definitely an indoor plant and the lighter green growth is newer and will darken with time. If the weather is mild then keeping it outside is okay but it cannot withstand harsh cold. After all, the weather in Hawaii is tropical rather than temperate. Comprehensive care is available on this site.

Your tree sounds like its fine. Schefflera arboricola is the proper name for your tree in case you need to look up anything else.

The new growth on these is always a much lighter green color. They will also be smaller and not as well defined in shape. If it is a young plant, most all of the new growth will be at the top. You'll eventually see the same kind of growth from developing branches.

The Schefflera is a tropical plant. That is why it is called an "indoor" bonsai. It needs to be protected from temperatures much below 50 degrees F. All plant grow best outdoors. It's where they live :) So if you can, and as the weather allows, keep you plant outside. Just keep it out of full direct sun, it can't handle that. Also know it will dry out much faster outdoors.
Indoors will be OK for the tree. I would try to keep it in a bright location. One way to tell if it is doing OK inside would be to watch for "elongation" or "leggy" growth. This happens when the plant is not getting enough light. The spaces between the leaf stems (called "nodes") will get longer and longer as it reaches up for more light. While this is not really that bad, it doesn't help with keeping the bonsai style.

Also, as the leaves get older and the plant develops, the leaves will eventually die off as the "trunk" of the tree forms. First they will turn yellow, then brown, then fall off. This is normal, as long as it's not happening to the entire plant. You'll find that new branches will develop from where the leaf stems came out from the trunk.
References :
Bonsai grower 15yrs+
