i need help with my first bonsai?

Posted by Bonsai Care on Feb 7, 2009

Im new to growing bonsai’s
i have just purchased some Japanese maple seeds and i would like to force germination.
Can some one please tell me how to do that with maple seeds and if there are any things i should know.

First of all, seeds will germinate into standard plants. Turning the plant into a bonsai comes afterwards.

Melanie:

The actual “bonsai” will be created as you prune and shape the plant during early spring to summer months.

You’ll want to educate yourself on bonsai styles and how to apply the wires to the branches properly.

Remember some key factors here…

- Only water the soil when it feels dry. This holds true when the plant is in development as well. Don’t water according to the plant, water according to the soil.

- Never water in the wintertime.

- Keep your bonsai outside 90% of the time away from direct sunlight.
I try to keep mind next to shrubbery where it will receive shade periodically throughout the day.

I found a great article that goes into more detail on the basics of bonsai care here:

Don’t let the url freak you out. It’s an article from a “stress relief” site but the bonsai care tips are very very good.

Have fun with it!
