"Bonsai" is a Japanese word that simply translates to "tree in a pot." It is not a lot of work, so I think it may cheer her. That's a really wonderful idea. You could give her a card with it that says something about how patience is the key to developing a beautiful bonsai tree, and you know that with patience she will one day get to take her longed-for trip to Japan (and that you are rooting for her all the way.) You are a sweetie. I love this idea.
